FCVW15 IoT Session Walkthrough of the virtual world environment

My career has involved working in higher education across academic disciplines to advance teaching and learning. The primary goal has been to assure access and success to obtain formal credentials. My personal research interests focus around two activities that apply beyond higher education.

Exploring authenticity (identity) through mediated use of avatars in Collaborative Virtual Environments (Virtual-physioception)

Exploring effects of avatar use on personal mastery related to collaboration (Virtual intersubjective presencing)

Both of these constructs lead to a strengths-based paradigm of learning, education, and citizenship.

Researching these questions involve the use of emerging technology that can be applied across various disciplinary topics such as:

  • Improving self-regulation for decision-making under stress
  • Building leadership and authenticity
  • Improving protection and security
  • Improving patients outcomes in medical care
  • Recruiting minorities and improving accessibility retention including for STEM/STEAM

To date, my scholarship has included topics that involve transdisciplinarity, collaborative virtual environments, digital game-based learning, authentic assessment, experiential learning, ePortfolios, simulation, serious games, social constructivism, and appreciative inquiry.

In 2015 my focus centered on Human Computer Interaction involving cyber physical systems.

My dissertation topic was on the relationship of dialogue in collaborative virtual environments that lean toward transdisciplinarity. Special thanks to Dr. Basarab Nicolescu for posting the .pdf document on the International Center for Transdisciplinary Research website, Transformative Interactions using Embodied Avatars in Collaborative Virtual Environments: Towards Transdisciplinarity. The research study was conducted in association with Colorado Technical University’s Computer Science, Emerging Media Program under the supervision of Dr. Cynthia Calongne. Some of the proposal slides are found on Slideshare. The study aimed to broaden understanding of the relationship impact of using avatars that affect collaboration.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2014 my colleague and friend, Dr. Francisca Yonekura and I kicked off the 2014 Speaker Series for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). The fantastic group made a wonderful aquatic environment and streamed the session in a Hangout. The video is below:
